Transcript of 67th Session between Charles Balis, M.D. and Ms. Anna Green, Thursday, January 8, 1998 at 4 pm.

Dr. Balis: Hello, Anna. Please come in. How are things going?
Ms. Green: Oh, let me see...life's hell, home's worse, work's okay.
Dr. Balis: I see. So let's start with home. What's going on? Is Kathy still there?
Ms. Green: What do you think?
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Good answer. Yes, she is.
Dr. Balis: So what's your status with Martin?
Ms. Green: We had a very long conversation about life and about us.
Dr. Balis: And?
Ms. Green: He said that he's still in love with me and doesn't want to lose me.
Dr. Balis: And do you believe him?
Ms. Green: Actually, I do.
Dr. Balis: What about Kathy?
Ms. Green: She's still throwing up. For a while there, I thought that she might just be faking it, you know? I thought she was pretending to be pregnant to keep a grip on the relationship.
Dr. Balis: But you believe she's pregnant now?
Ms. Green: I insisted that we all go to her doctor's appointment and verify her claim. Well, I saw the thing on the ultrasound. It's there. That bitch is in fact pregnant. You know, I should have seen it coming.
Dr. Balis: What do you mean?
Ms. Green: She had no chance. No chance at all. So she arranged to be alone with Martin and fucked him until...well, now it's all a big mess.
Dr. Balis: How does Martin feel about Kathy's pregnancy?
Ms. Green: He's freaked. I think it was all just too surreal for him. I guess he thought that it might just go away on it's own or something.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: But when we went to the OBGYN...well, it just hit him hard, I guess. He was all white and shaking. The doctor even made him sit down and got the nurse to bring him some water. I guess it's not the first time he saw a man lose it at the sight of his own fetus.
Dr. Balis: And how did you feel?
Ms. Green: I felt a lot of things, Doctor. I was angry...furious. I felt trapped. I felt dizzy. My stomach cramped up. And, more than anything, I wanted that thing dead.
Dr. Balis: I see.
Ms. Green: Martin told me that he tried to raise the issue of an abortion with Kathy. He told her that he felt too young to be responsible for another life.
Dr. Balis: And what was Kathy's reaction?
Ms. Green: He never actually used the word abortion. He just maneuvered around the issue. I know that she knew what he was doing, but she never let on. Martin said that she just refused to understand his hints. But I think she understood just fine.
Dr. Balis: So Kathy is not interested in getting an abortion.
Ms. Green: No, she's going to extort as much out of this as she can.
Dr. Balis: You don't think that she wants this baby?
Ms. Green: I think she wants the power that this baby will bring to her. But no, I don't really think that if she wasn't part of our relationship, she would be going out to get herself knocked up right now.
Dr. Balis: Perhaps that's true. But she was...is in a relationship. And it might be that she actually considered it serious enough...
Ms. Green: Whose side are you on anyway?
Dr. Balis: I'm...
Ms. Green: This is total manipulation on Kathy's part. And this is not just my opinion either.
Dr. Balis: It's...
Ms. Green: Martin is very strongly against this pregnancy, too. But we just can't force her to have an abortion. So we have to carefully figure it out.
Dr. Balis: What do you mean by that?
Ms. Green: If it was up to me, Doctor, I would have thrown out that floozy regardless. But Martin does feel responsible. Although frankly, I don't think he's to blame. She did make representations that she was on birth control. So she lied and cheated her way into this. Martin is completely innocent.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: But his innocence aside, we still have a problem.
Dr. Balis: Yes, you do.
Ms. Green: I'm not denying it, Doctor. I'm really focused on this situation.
Dr. Balis: So what is your plan? You obviously have one.
Ms. Green: It's not that simple. Martin's greatest concern right now is that she will carry his baby to term.
Dr. Balis: Is there a problem with that?
Ms. Green: Well, she was suicidal...
Dr. Balis: Anna, if that's at all an issue...
Ms. Green: I don't think it is. But what Martin is worried about is that, once the baby is born, Kathy is very likely to abuse it. She was abused as a kid. She ran away from home when she was twelve and lived on the street for a while. Then she lived with her aunt for a few years. But as soon as she could, she left her and came out to San Francisco.
Dr. Balis: I thought Kathy's parents were dead.
Ms. Green: She keeps changing her story, but as of today, her mom died of breast cancer before she ran away, and her dad was a certified pedophile and sexually abused her. Now, I'm not saying that any of this is true. But just the fact that she might be making all of this shit up shows just how fucked up she really is. She is clearly not fit to be a mother. Martin is worried that she would purposely hurt his child to get at him.
Dr. Balis: I see.
Ms. Green: So if she actually does have this baby, we have to have some control over it.
Dr. Balis: We?
Ms. Green: Yes, Martin and I. We have to have legal rights to the child. Now, at this point, Kathy is willing to sign anything that would prove to Martin that this is his child.
Dr. Balis: Yes, and?
Ms. Green: So legally, Martin has all the rights of a father. Given that he will be in a steady married relationship and with a job, he is a much better candidate for the custody of this kid.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Kathy is a known drug user, without a good job or a place to live--after the baby is born, of course.
Dr. Balis: So let me get this straight. Your plan is to live together with Kathy until the baby is born, then get married to Martin and file for custody of his child. Did I get it right?
Ms. Green: More or less.
Dr. Balis: What's the less part?
Ms. Green: I want to be married as soon as possible. It could be a secret marriage. We could do the whole wedding thing after the baby is born.
Dr. Balis: And how does Martin feel about this plan?
Ms. Green: He's fine with it.
Dr. Balis: Does he know about it?
Ms. Green: Yeah.
Dr. Balis: You don't sound so convincing.
Ms. Green: Right now, Martin is just too out of it to be able to think clearly.
Dr. Balis: So you are doing all the thinking for both...for the three of you.
Ms. Green: Look, Doctor, if Martin gets involved with Kathy he will regret it. Maybe not immediately, but some day he'll be really sorry. And then what? The baby--if it's still just one baby by then--will still be in jeopardy while it's in Kathy's possession. And it might be a lot harder to wrestle it away from her by then. And...
Dr. Balis: Hold on. Hold on, Anna. Aside from all of the rest, are you sure that what you want is to be a mother of Kathy's and Martin's child? From the way you're talking, you're not even expressing a lot of compassion for it...
Ms. Green: I'm just angry at Kathy. It will pass. God, look at the time. I've got to go, Doctor--there's no reason to give that witch a chance at being alone with Martin. He's just not strong enough for that.
Dr. Balis: But, Anna...well, okay. I'll be gone on vacation for the next two weeks and so...
Ms. Green: It's not a problem, Doctor. I know what to do. And I have my life pretty well under control right now.
Dr. Balis: Yes, well, as I was saying. I can be reached in emergencies--just call my answering service. There's a doctor on call...
Ms. Green: I don't care to talk to anyone but you, Doctor.
Dr. Balis: All right. Please try to think things through before acting, all right? And we'll get back to our conversation as soon as I'm back from Hawaii.
Ms. Green: Hawaii, hmm?
Dr. Balis: Yes.
Ms. Green: Good for you. I wish I was going. Okay, I'll see you in two weeks, Doctor.
Dr. Balis: That's January 29th, okay?
Ms. Green: Yeah, yeah, I got to go now. See you.
Dr. Balis: Goodbye, Anna.
