Transcript of 95th Session between Charles Balis, M.D. and Ms. Anna Green, Thursday, October 8, 1998 at 4:00 pm.

Ms. Green: Hello, Doctor Balis.
Dr. Balis: Hello, Anna. You look much better today.
Ms. Green: The antibiotics seemed to have worked well. I do feel a lot better.
Dr. Balis: Good. Well, I would like to come back to our conversation...
Ms. Green: Do we really have to, Doctor? I've really have heard enough already.
Dr. Balis: Actually, you really didn't give me a chance to fully express my...
Ms. Green: Actually, it's not really an issue any more.
Dr. Balis: What do you mean? Are you having sex with Martin or not?
Ms. Green: I was. But we got to do it for just a few days before...it's really an ugly story, Doctor.
Dr. Balis: That's okay, I'm listening.
Ms. Green: I thought you'd feel that way. Well, you'll be happy to know that Martin has moved out of my house.
Dr. Balis: Really? And why is that?
Ms. Green: Apparently, my dad was so worried about me that he hired a detective to watch the house--"Just in case," as he put it. Well, the guy didn't see anything more suspicious than Martin. But he did report him to my dad.
Dr. Balis: Hmm. I thought your dad knew all about Martin living with you?
Ms. Green: Well...
Dr. Balis: You told me specifically that your dad thought having Martin around for protection was okay with him. Was it really? Did you ever tell your dad about Martin moving in with you?
Ms. Green: Well...
Dr. Balis: Yeah?
Ms. Green: Well, it was my dad's idea that I shouldn't live alone.
Dr. Balis: That's not the same as approving of Martin moving in with you.
Ms. Green: No.
Dr. Balis: Oh, Anna.
Ms. Green: See? This is your reaction. My dad's reaction would have been just awful. So why should I get into all the sordid details with him? As it is, he thinks it's all Martin's fault. All of it.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: And I know you agree with him. But it worked out pretty well. I did feel safer with Martin around. And nothing really happened.
Dr. Balis: Martin just lived with you for a few weeks, and you had sex together.
Ms. Green: And that's it. End of story. We are not seeing each other again. I promise you, Doctor. I don't even think Martin is right for me.
Dr. Balis: So your dad didn't take the news well?
Ms. Green: No. He surprised us. He drove down to San Francisco last Friday night and caught us at home together. No, we weren't having sex. We were just watching TV and eating a late dinner. But my dad...you'd think that eating and watching TV was a carnal sin.
Dr. Balis: Well...
Ms. Green: Don't say it, Doctor. I've heard it all. The good news is that the detective guy didn't really see anything suspicious in all the time he had been watching the house. So I feel a lot safer now, even without Martin.
Dr. Balis: So Martin is no longer staying with you?
Ms. Green: He's back in his old apartment. My dad stayed with me the whole weekend just to be sure.
Dr. Balis: I see.
Ms. Green: I've talked with Martin. We both know that ultimately it's for the best.
Dr. Balis: How so?
Ms. Green: Well, when we lived together, there really wasn't that much incentive to go and seek someone else.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Now, we can try. Maybe we'll find...I would like to have someone, Doctor. I'm tired.
Dr. Balis: Tired?
Ms. Green: Yeah. I don't want to fight with my parents or my friends. I don't want to have you be disappointed with me...
Dr. Balis: I'm...
Ms. Green: Sure you are. I counted. This is our ninety-fifth session together, not counting our telephone conversations. I know you pretty well by now.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: So I don't want to have you disapprove of me. And I don't want to keep catching myself from slipping into a real relationship with Martin. Oh, we'll still be friends, I think. I'm not threatened by him anymore...
Dr. Balis: Were you ever?
Ms. Green: And I'm over the hurt. And I'm no longer embarrassed by all the things that happened between Martin and me.
Dr. Balis: Were you embarrassed?
Ms. Green: I didn't handle that relationship very well.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: So I think we can be friends. We have to be.
Dr. Balis: Why is that?
Ms. Green: We have to work together pretty closely.
Dr. Balis: I didn't know that.
Ms. Green: Well...so...
Dr. Balis: I'm a little surprised by you today, Anna.
Ms. Green: Really?
Dr. Balis: This is not the reaction I would have predicted for you after your father found out about you and Martin living together in secret from him.
Ms. Green: Good.
Dr. Balis: Why is that?
Ms. Green: I mean it's good. I would hate to be your most predictable patient.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Well, I think I better go now.
Dr. Balis: We still have a lot of time, Anna. And I think we might find something to talk about. For example, are you...
Ms. Green: No, really. I think I'm getting tired. Don't you want me to get some extra sleep?
Dr. Balis: I do. But I'm getting a feeling that today's session was staged for my benefit.
Ms. Green: Really? And what makes you think that?
Dr. Balis: Was it?
Ms. Green: No. I do admit to having thought about our session, but nothing more than that. Don't you think about our sessions sometimes? Don't you try to get ready for me?
Dr. Balis: Were you trying to get ready for our session today?
Ms. Green: I told you what happened. It's the truth. My dad now knows everything...well, almost.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: Martin is gone. And I'm free to pursue other relationships.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: So you're doing a very fine job with me, Doctor.
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: And I'm tired, and I think if I take off a few minutes early today...well, what's the harm? Really, Doctor, I'll see you next week. We can talk about your fears then. Okay? Please?
Dr. Balis: Hmm.
Ms. Green: See you next week.
Dr. Balis: All right. We can end the session early today. But we will continue this conversation next time. I'm...
Ms. Green: Goodbye.
Dr. Balis: Hmm. Goodbye, Anna.
