Transcript of Telephone Conversation between Charles Balis, M.D. and Mr. Martin Fleck respecting Anna Green, Monday, February 24, 1997 at 9:00 AM PST (11:00 AM CST).

Mr. Fleck: Hello. May I speak with Doctor Balis?
Dr. Balis: Speaking.
Mr. Fleck: Hello Doctor Balis.
Dr. Balis: Hello. Who is this?
Mr. Fleck: You don't know me but you might have heard about me from Anna Green. I'm Martin Fleck.
Dr. Balis: Hello Martin. How may I help you?
Mr. Fleck: Well Doctor, I'm sure you know that Anna came out here to Michigan to visit me last weekend.
Dr. Balis: Yes.
Mr. Fleck: Right, you know that. Well I think I might have done something really stupid.
Dr. Balis: Really?
Mr. Fleck: Yes, well...I wanted to show Anna something, but it turned out rather poorly.
Dr. Balis: I see.
Mr. Fleck: I don't know if Anna told you about this, but I like...well sometimes I practice a little S&M. There I said it. Doctor? You know it's not really all that bad. We don't do anything wrong. It's all consensual. Really!
Dr. Balis: I understand. And I'm not about to condemn your sexual practices. What I don't understand is why you took Anna to one of your meetings completely unprepared?
Mr. Fleck: I didn't think...
Dr. Balis: No you didn't. That was incredibly stupid. You knew that Anna didn't know anything about that world and you should have known that she was likely to misinterpret what she saw as wrong and even evil. If you'd just given it half a thought, you might have spared Anna the horror that she clearly experienced that night and spared the other club members the embarrassment of having to face the police when they arrived.
Mr. Fleck: You know about that?
Dr. Balis: Anna called me after the incident.
Mr. Fleck: Do you know where she is?
Dr. Balis: You mean she's missing?
Mr. Fleck: I was never able to find her that night and she never came back to my place. I assumed that she just flew home. I was hoping that you could talk to her for me. I might have strange sexual tastes but I'm not a pervert. I really like Anna. I think I feel even stronger than that about her. I don't want to lose her over a misunderstanding. Please help me Doctor.
Dr. Balis: Martin, I fully intend to have a very long and frank discussion with Anna about that night. But I haven't spoken to her since then. When I do, I let her know that you've contacted me. Is that all right?
Mr. Fleck: Oh please Doctor! Yes, please let her know that I'm really sorry and extremely worried about her. I would really like to talk to her. In fact I'm planning to fly out there as soon as I can.
Dr. Balis: When would that be?
Mr. Fleck: I'm hoping I can make it this weekend. I wouldn't be able to stay long, maybe just a day. But I want Anna to know how I feel and I think I need to do it in person. Don't you think?
Dr. Balis: I'm not sure how Anna feels about you right now and I wouldn't presume to advise you on your relationship with my patient.
Mr. Fleck: I know you can make it all right Doctor Balis. She thinks the world of you and she trusts you so completely. She'd listen to you. Please Doctor Balis. Please!
Dr. Balis: I'll try to see if I can undo some of the damage you've done.
Mr. Fleck: Thank you. Thank you. You don't know just how much this...she means to me.
Dr. Balis: Is there anything else?
Mr. Fleck: No. This is the biggest favor any man could ever do for me.
Dr. Balis: Then have a good day Mr. Fleck.
Mr. Fleck: Thank you. And you too Doctor Balis.
