Ditto on Toni Morrison (especially JAZZ for its strong setting). T.R. Pearson is an undiscovered Mark Twain. T. Coraghessan Boyle tells a good story (but have a dictionary on hand). Let's not forget E. Annie Proulx who wrote THE SHIPPING NEWS.

John Irving is a favoite for humor and his curiosity for dwarves, the tongueless, and other misfits (THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP). It is probably Irving who influenced the book I'm writing about an amputee (four chapters into it.)
